What is a Bastion, anyway?
Fort Victoria had two fortified log towers, called bastions, when it was founded in 1843 by the Hudson’s Bay Company. A boomtown grew around the fort during the gold rush in 1858 and stores, saloons, and a jail were soon built beside one of the towers.
Bastion Square was born.
